Little is said about treating children with acupuncture according to the Philosophy of Stems & Branches and Joan Duveen’s teaching on this subject is based on the knowledge as learned from Dr. van Buren, who passed away in May 2003, and the personal experience he has from treating children for more than 20 years.
Knowledge and understanding of paediatrics has become more and more important in the acupuncture clinic. Because of differences in child psychology, physiology and pathology we need different approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of children. These two seminars will show you the different approach within the field of paediatrics and will enable you to treat children effectively and with understanding.
Besides studying the psychological phases of development according to the philosophy of stems and branches, we also will study strategies and treatment approaches of diseases such as ADHD, problems with diet, lung pathology and abdominal pains.
Tue, 23rd Oct & Tue, 27 th Nov 2007 from 4.30pm to 7.30pm
Open to fourth year students and graduates £30/students £25 per evening |

Spirit of the Points: Yuan Source & Luo Points
with Peter Firebrace
This seminar will first explore the concept of Yuan - the Source or Origin - from Chinese philosophical and medical texts to deepen our understanding of its intimate relationship with the Lower Dan Tian, Ming Men, the Kidneys and the Triple Heater and its crucial role in the maintenance of health. This will be followed by a study of the Yuan Source points mentioned in the Neijing Lingshu chapter 1 and Nanjing chapter 66.
We will then explore the concept of Luo - a link or connection - that is fundamental to Chinese medicine. Without the Luo, we would be disconnected. These will be studied from the Chinese medical classics, particularly the Lingshu, Jiayijing and Zhenjiu Dacheng. Many have strong emotional indications, such as SI 7 Zhi Zheng for 'knotting of the seven emotions' leading to agitation and hysteria or P 6 Nei Guan for 'unravelling' where the ministerial fire loses its ability to protect the sovereign, leading to emotional instability.
A summary of each of these powerful and important points will be presented, including an analysis of the point name from the Chinese characters, its functions, key symptoms and common combinations, together with an example of its clinical use.
Saturday May 21st & July 2nd 2011 (10.00am – 5.30pm)
